Can anyone have teeth whitening?
Generally, anyone who has healthy teeth and gums and is looking to improve the appearance of their smile can benefits from teeth whitening.
Does teeth whitening improve the appearance of crowns, dentures, and veneers?
Teeth whitening will only work on your natural enamel. It will not improve the appearance of existing restorations such as composite fillings, dentures, crowns, bonding, veneers and bridges. This means that any pre-existing dental work may need to be replaced to match the new tooth shade.
What teeth whitening do you offer?
Here at Ringmer Dental we offer at home teeth whitening. The dentist will first take impressions of your teeth. These will then be sent away to the laboratory for them to make custom made whitening trays. The dentist will show you how to apply the gel to the trays and will advise you how long you should wear them for, this will depend on the strength of the gel used and how quickly you are looking to get results.
How long will treatment take?
We would normally expect you to see results within two to three weeks.
How many shades whiter will my teeth go?
The improvement in colour will vary from person to person, but in general teeth may lighten anywhere from 6 to 12 shades.
How long will the effects last?
Teeth whiteningis not permanent. We would normally advise that you have a top up treatment every year.
Will teeth whitening harm my teeth?
Studies have shown that using 10% carbamide peroxide has no effect on the hardness or mineral content of a tooth’s enamel surface. Professional teeth whitening does not cause permanent damage to the enamel on your teeth and is considered harmless by most dental health professionals.
What are the side effects of teeth whitening?
Some people may find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the treatment. Others may have discomfort in the gums, a sore throat, or white patches on the gum line. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a few days of the treatment finishing.
What aftercare will my teeth need?

- Brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day, with a fluoride toothpaste.
- Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks.
- Visit your dental teamregularly, as often as they recommend.
- You can help to keep your teeth white by cutting down on the amount of food and drinks you have that can stain teeth.
- Don’t forget, stopping smoking can also help prevent discolouration and staining.
