Toothbrush tips to keep your teeth in shape

Toothbrush tips to keep your teeth in shape

On entering any chemist or supermarket and heading to the cosmetics aisle you will find yourself faced with an ever-increasing array of toothbrushes. In this blog, the team at Ringmer Dental look at the key factors to consider when choosing a new toothbrush.

It does not matter whether you are looking for a manual or an electric there are some key factors to take into account.

Size

Your toothbrush should fit in your mouth comfortably and allow you to brush all the hard to reach areas. If in doubt it is always better to go for a smaller head as this will allow you to most easily reach your molars at the back of your mouth. Larger heads are available but can be very difficult to manoeuvre in the small spaces.

Bristle Variety

It is very easy to brush too vigorously, if you have a toothbrush with medium to hard bristles. This can lead to damaging your teeth and gums and in the long run can lead your gums to recede exposing the tooth root below, which can be very sensitive. When brushing your teeth, you are looking to remove the plaque that builds up over the course of the day and night. Plaque is sticky but soft and therefore does not need vigorous brushing to remove it. Most dentists would advise that you use a toothbrush with soft bristles. This may take some time to get used to but will help to protect and maintain your teeth in the long run.

Comfort

A key consideration in choosing a toothbrush is will you use it. For people with limited dexterity it may be easier to use an electric toothbrush, or it is also possible to get toothbrushes with adapted handles. It is also worth considering your lifestyle. If you are someone who travels a lot having yet another charger to take for your electric toothbrush may be too difficult, so a manual toothbrush may be a better option.

Effectiveness

There have been a number of studies conducted into the effectiveness of electric and manual toothbrushes and overall there has been no significant difference found between the two in their ability to remove plaque and prevent gum disease.

Provided you clean your teeth twice a day using a proper brushing technique, you should be able to remove any plaque build-up and keep your teeth healthy whether you use a manual or an electric toothbrush.

Recommendation

If you are still unsure of the best toothbrush for you, do not hesitate to ask the dentist or hygienist at your next appointment.

Changing your toothbrush

Whether you use a manual or an electric toothbrush it is important to ensure that you change your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three months or sooner if the bristles become worn. As the bristles splay out they will no longer be able to clean your teeth effectively. Remember for every toothbrush, there is a season!
